Orangespotted Sunfish

Orangespotted Sunfish are found statewide and most abundant in low gradient, turbid, warm water streams, ponds and impoundments. However, Orangespotted Sunfish can also be found in glacial lakes. They feed on insects and crustaceans.

They have a laterally compressed body with olive-brown color grading to an orange-red belly and it’s sides heavily spotted with bright orange spots. Their mouths are moderate sized, rounded pectoral fins and the ear flap is flexible with a black spot outlined in white. Spawning conditions turn the head bright blue with lateral orange streaks.
