McNenny State Fish Hatchery

McNenny State Fish Hatchery produces trout and salmon. These fish are stocked in the Black Hills, Missouri River Reservoirs, and Eastern South Dakota. Trout and salmon are not native to South Dakota. High fishing pressure, low natural reproduction, and limited food supplies create the need for stocking.

McNenny Hatchery produces around 75,000 pounds of fish each year. Water to the hatchery is supplied from three artesian wells and numerous springs. This water stays at 52° F year-round.

The goal of McNenny State Fish Hatchery is to maximize angler satisfaction. To accomplish this goal, fish quality and post- stocking survival are emphasized. Hatchery professionals are continually improving the techniques and procedures used to produce fish, and strive to be leaders in fisheries and aquaculture research.

Visitors are welcome at McNenny from 8:00 to 3:30, Monday through Friday, except on Holidays. The display pond is the only location at the hatchery where fish can be observed. Because visitors cannot see most of the hatchery, numerous interpretive signs describe hatchery operations. Tours of the facility are only available for large groups, and must be scheduled well in advance.

From South Dakota I-90, take Exit 2 near the Wyoming border and follow the signs.

Volunteers

Volunteers are welcome to help with fish rearing, tagging and marking, spawning, stocking, landscaping and educational outreach. Local community members, retirees, Boy Scouts and students have all used their talents to improve hatchery operations.
