Black Crappie

The Black Crappie is primarily found in warm and cool water habitats of ponds, lakes and impoundments. This species is less tolerant of turbidity and warmer water than White Crappies. The Black Crappie is found throughout the state and feeds on plankton, crustaceans, insects and small fishes. 

The Black Crappie has a deep, laterally compressed body with 7-8 hard spines on the dorsal fin. The distance from the eye to the front of the dorsal din is about equal to the base of the dorsal fin. They have a mottled or speckled pattern of dark blotches on a light background on their sides.
